What Makes This Workshop Special?

It has been 5 years since I created my workshop "The Improv Block of the Month." This is a very different course...

When I sat down to design this workshop, I thought about what quilting represents—not just as a craft, but as a conversation with tradition and self-expression. I’m inspired by my mom’s love of tradition and the fact that she was a bit intimidated by my work. This workshop is a Love Letter to her... And if she was here, I know she would be interested in this one... Maybe. ☺️

Also, years ago I saw a quilt at a show... It was very traditional and made from 6" sampler blocks. I loved it because I enjoy intricate work. I always said I wanted to make something like this, but in my own way. It is my intention to create a large piece that I may actually wrap myself in, or put on my bed if I so choose.

Improv has always been at the heart of my work, and this course celebrates that freedom. But I also understand the comfort of structure, and for those who prefer a guide to follow, like my mom.

The blocks I make will be reverse-engineered, and there will be a printable PDF pattern for each block design that I create. You may choose to follow along, if you like what I’m doing, change it or disregard the pattern completely.

This isn’t just "another block of the month.” It’s a testament to how our work as artists and makers can reflect where we are in life—be it a new town, a milestone birthday, (I celebrate 60 years in January!) or the thrill of creating something unplanned yet deeply intentional.

You will have continued access to this course after we finish in December. All Live Lessons will be recorded and available in the Community.

Your Year of Unfolding – Here's How It Works

Monthly Live Sessions: We’ll meet once a month starting in January to create, learn, and share. Each session I will introduce a block design, techniques, and options tailored to your pace and preferences. There will be video demonstration of how to assemble the block.
Creative Freedom with Support: Follow patterns I create, adapt them, or go your own way—this course is designed to encourage YOUR creative voice.
A Yearlong Celebration: Over the course of 12 months, watch your creation come to life. Together, we’ll celebrate what we’ve made and the community we’ve built during our final session in December.

Whether you’re drawn to a slow, meditative pace or prefer creating larger scale work, this course has been designed with options, flexibility, and joy in mind. My deep love for improv and structured creativity comes together to guide you in a way that feels freeing yet focused.

And the best part? We’ll tackle this together, one block and one month at a time, culminating in December with a celebration of what we’ve created together. I will create 10 designs, and I will be repeating those blocks throughout the piece. The last two months will focus on construction, though I'll be talking about that throughout the workshop.
